With MiCA set to come into force in early 2025, this explosive decision could shake up the European market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, during the <strong>Token2049<\/strong> summit in Dubai, Paolo Ardoino dropped a bombshell: Tether will not seek MiCA approval to maintain USDT in Europe. With a market capitalization of <strong>$150 billion<\/strong>, USDT dominates stablecoins and fuels liquidity on global <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.investx.fr\/en\/crypto-investing\/exchange\/best-cryptocurrency-exchange\/\">exchanges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This refusal, unlike the compliance adopted by <strong>Circle<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.investx.fr\/en\/crypto-news\/circle-usdc-stablecoin-issuer-stock-market-debut\/\">USDC<\/a>, EURC), risks cutting off USDT from the European market. Platforms like <strong>Binance<\/strong> or <strong>Kraken<\/strong> could soon <strong>delist USDT <\/strong>to comply with MiCA, limiting its access to users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-is-tether-targeting-the-ecb\">Why is Tether Targeting the ECB ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardoino denounces the requirements of MiCA, notably the obligation to <strong>hold 60%<\/strong> of reserves in bank deposits in the EU, which he deems risky for banks in times of crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/USDT?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#USDT<\/a> is pulling back from Europe?<br><br>Tether CEO won\u2019t apply for a MiCA license, citing the need to \u201cprotect 400M+ users worldwide.\u201d<br><br>He accuses the ECB of pushing the digital euro to control people and their spending.<br><br>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tether_to?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Tether_to<\/a> backs MiCA-compliant stablecoin issuers\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mjRwKVNWFo\">pic.twitter.com\/mjRwKVNWFo<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Vladimir Kardapoltsev (VK) (@VladimirKard) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VladimirKard\/status\/1918027762012496168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;I am protecting our 400 million global users, not just Europe,&#8221;<\/em> he insists, refusing to split USDT reserves. He also accuses the ECB of using MiCA to <strong>promote its digital euro,<\/strong> seen as a tool for <strong>financial control<\/strong> at the expense of <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.investx.fr\/en\/crypto-news\/tether-trumps-stablecoin-global-finance\/\">private stablecoins<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MiCA aims to regulate crypto-assets in Europe, imposing on stablecoin issuers liquid reserves, increased <strong>transparency<\/strong>, and <strong>anti-money laundering<\/strong> standards. Planned for 2025, this regulation coincides with the ECB&#8217;s <strong>digital euro project,<\/strong> seen by some as a response to the dominance of USDT, pegged to the dollar. This desire for digital monetary sovereignty could explain the strictness of MiCA, but it clashes with players like Tether, who see it as a threat to innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"implications-for-european-users\">Implications for European Users<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tether&#8217;s non-compliance will have <strong>tangible repercussions<\/strong>.
