The platform has confirmed a sophisticated <strong>cyberattack<\/strong> that allowed hackers to manipulate employees abroad, steal customer data, and demand a <strong>$20 million ransom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Cyber criminals bribed and recruited rogue overseas support agents to pull personal data on &lt;1% of Coinbase MTUs. Coinbase estimates the financial impact between <strong>$180 to<\/strong> <strong>$400 million<\/strong> for reimbursing affected clients. <em>&#8220;We refuse to give in to the hackers and are offering $20 million for their arrest,&#8221;<\/em> the company stated on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This attack is part of a wave of record cybercrime. According to Chainalysis, 2024 saw <strong>$2.2 billion<\/strong> stolen in 303 crypto incidents, a <strong>21%<\/strong> increase from 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Jardine, a researcher at Chainalysis, notes: <em>&#8220;Private key compromises, often through phishing, account for 43.8% of losses.&#8221;<\/em> Bo Pei, an analyst at U.S. Tiger Securities, adds: <em>&#8220;This attack exposes flaws in employee control and risks staining Coinbase&#8217;s reputation.&#8221;<\/em> To counter these threats, experts recommend offline storage and multisignature wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sec-investigation-casts-doubt\">SEC Investigation Casts Doubt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Simultaneously, an <strong>SEC investigation<\/strong> into potentially misleading user metrics further weakens the company.
